Hitchcock Introduces Daniels Brenner's mom Lydia and Suzanne Pleshette as his previous girlfriend Annie long before action occurs. The suspense level is raised due to Hitchcock making time to establish the relationships between the two protagonists. Some memorable roles are performed by Jessica Tandy as Brenner's mother, Lydia, and by Suzanne Pleshette as his former girlfriend, Annie. Evan Hunter (better known as Ed McBain) adapted the screenplay from a Daphne Du Maurier novella. Hitchcock employed electronic sound effects rather than musical scores to great effect. Hitchcock studied a bizarre attack that occurred on Capitola in California in the year 1961, caused by sooty Shearwaters that was thought to be the result of diatom poisoning from anchovies that the birds ate which led to the extreme aggressiveness.
