Nancy Wilson, a jazz performer and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on 20 February 1937 to Olden Wilson, an ironworker who had worked for a long period as housekeeper. Nancy is the youngest of six siblings. Her father's love of music and his collection of records at home were a huge influence on Nancy when she was a little girl. At the age of four, Nancy knew that she wanted to be an artist. She developed her musical talent through singing in choirs at church. After high school when she started appearing regularly on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when won the TV talent show. In the nightclubs she started singing at the age of 15. Nancy completed high school aged 17 and enrolled in Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a full year. Then she dropped out to pursue a profession as a professional musician. Her first recording was in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. They was on tour from 1956 until 1958. Nancy released her first album with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she make the move into New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959, Nancy moved in The Big Town. In less than a month she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company heard her sing and immediately agreed to sign her. In 1960, he signed her to Capitol Records. That same year she released her debut single. Guess Who Saw Today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. She began by focusing on R&B however, under Adderley's influence, she embraced jazz. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley and their 1962 collaboration made her a star. Her breakthrough song Tell Me the Truth by 1963. In the year following, this led to her being invited to New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
